The Higher Education Strategy Associates (HESA) has selected "A New History of the Humanities" as one of the "Books of the Year". They seem to refer to the new paperback edition of my book which came out in North America in January 2016, so yes, it's really this year.

31 december 2023: Ik spreek in "OVT" over het tragische einde van Taqi al-Din's observatorium

Op 31 december, om 11.25 spreek ik samen met anderen over de verweven geschiedenis van de astrologie en de astronomie. Onder meer over de opmerkelijke voorspellingen van de Babylonische astrologie en het trieste einde van het immense observatorium van Taqi al-Din in het Ottomaanse rijk na zijn verkeerde voorspelling. 12 December 2023: Lecture at VUB Brussels: "What kind of knowledge is the pursuit of meaning?"

On 12 December at 16.15h, I will give a talk at the KIIP seminar entitled "What kind of knowledge is the pursuit of meaning?". In this talk I will present a longue durée exploration of meaning-making from a global perspective. I argue that a total of 185 distinct meaning-making practices can be discerned that can be grouped into 30 themes. I discuss a number of general patterns and principles that can be found in meaning-making practices across the world and will go into the question as to what kind of knowledge meaning-making actually is. Op 15 november geef ik een lezing over de wereldgeschiedenis van zingeving in het Science Cafe in Deventer. Mensen met zingevende activiteiten zijn gezonder, gelukkiger en aantrekkelijker. Zingeving loont, dus hoe kan het dat er nog steeds geen overzicht bestaat van de vele zingevingsvormen in de wereld? Mijn boek "Waarom ben ik hier?" probeert precies zo'n overzicht te geven. 24 June 2021: Inaugural lecture and Francqui medal: "How the Humanities Changed the World"

Due to covid, my inaugural lecture as Francqui awardee will be held on 24 June. I will be awarded a medal by the Francqui Foundation, as well as a medal by the University of Ghent. I am honored to stand in a long line of Francqui medal recipients, starting with George Sarton, the founder of the academic discipline of History of Science.

On 18 June, at 5 pm, I will speak about Humanistic Activism at an online seminar (in Dutch). "The greatest societal transformations of the past are the result of humanistic insights. This is virtually unknown to the public. I will argue that an activist attitude that propagates the major humanities insights of past and present is more necessary than ever."

On 25 September I will give a lecture at Roskilde University entitled "Is there Progress in the Humanities?". Taking Kuhn's notion of problem-solving capacity as a measure of progress I will critically discuss whether there has been an increase in problem-solving capacity in linguistics, historiography, art history, philology, musicology, literary studies and archeology during the last few centuries.

On 1 October I will talk on the problem of pattern searching in the humanities with digital tools. I will argue that though digital tools are exceedingly useful in the humanities, scholars should well understand the workings and limitations of these tools. 9-13 September 2013: modelleren van taalverwerving

In de week van 9-13 september organiseer ik (mede) een workshop over het computationeel modelleren van kindertaalverwerving. Pikant historisch detail: mijn computermodellen grijpen terug op de ideeen van de 8e eeuwse Perzisch-Arabische taalkundige Sibawayh die er vanuit gaat dat het leren van taal plaatsvindt aan de hand van voorbeelden in plaats van regels. 28 juni 2013: Filosofie en digitale geesteswetenschappen

14 juni 2013: Decontextualizing Knowledge

Op 14 juni geef ik een lezing over het decontextualiseren van kennis in de geschiedenis van de wetenschap. Onder historici is decontextualiseren zeer controversieel, terwijl dit proces overal in de wetenschap wordt aangetroffen: methoden en oplossingen voor een bepaald probleem worden gedecontextualiseerd en toegepast op een heel ander probleem in een andere context. De digital humanities worden vaak "the next big thing" genoemd, maar een debat hierover met zowel voor- als tegenstanders wordt node gemist. Op 19 februari om 15.45 uur geef ik een lezing op het Max Planck Instituut in Nijmegen, waarbij ik inga op empirisch bewijs voor dan wel tegen hierarchische structuur in taal. Op 14 december om 16 uur geef ik in de Aula van de UvA (Singel 411) een openbare rede over "Het Einde van de Geesteswetenschappen 1.0". Met deze rede aanvaard ik openlijk mijn dubbelbenoeming bij de Faculteit Geesteswetenschappen en de Faculteit Natuurwetenschappen, Wiskunde en Informatica.

4 december 2012: Geschiedenis van de Digital Humanities

Op de Digitaal Erfgoedconferentie 2012 geef ik op 4 december een lezing over de geschiedenis van de 'digital humanities' in Nederland.
